Somatic therapy for trauma and anxiety
My approach is shaped by somatic and experiential models of therapy including Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Polyvagal Theory, Somatic Experiencing, and Affective Neuroscience. Through my integrative mind-body approach, we will work with your thoughts and emotions by exploring how these are stored in your body and experienced through your nervous system. Together, we will listen to what your body is communicating moment by moment about both the past and the present, as well as what your system needs in order to build safety and resilience, release trauma, and promote positive neuroplasticity (our innate propensity to evolve, heal, and create new neural pathways in the brain that are aligned with our health and vitality).
Our bodies are wired for healing, but above all else, they’re programmed to keep us safe. Because of this, our past experiences can cause us to get stuck living in perpetual fight or flight and unconsciously defaulting to self-protective strategies, making it difficult for us to feel at ease and live in the present moment. This can manifest in the body as insomnia, stomach issues, rumination, excessive worry, a felt sense of stuckness, or a general sense of unease, dissatisfaction, and disconnection from self and others.
The good news is, we can consciously heal and create new patterns that transform how we feel and are able to move through our lives.
Our bodies are full of untapped wisdom and can be a tremendous resource for our healing. Together, we will listen to the wisdom of your body, learn how you are wired, and come to understand what your nervous system needs in order to come back to regulation, generate energy when you need it, and navigate life’s ups and downs with more ease.
My goal is to support you in a way that diminishes your suffering, equips you to manage the challenges in your life as they arise, and helps you to experience a sense of alignment, purpose, and joy.
what is somatic therapy?
Somatic therapy taps into the mind-brain-body connection to support your healing as a whole being. Though we live in a disembodied culture, our bodies are an inextricable part of us. They are the place where feelings are felt, memories are stored, and vitality is activated.
AEDP
Accelerate Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy is a transformational approach to therapy that helps individuals process overwhelming emotion associated with trauma in a unique way that activates deep healing in the brain-body system. It is relational, thoroughly backed by neuroscience, and has become my therapeutic “home” ever since I first learned about it. I love working this way with my clients. It feels to me like the way we are meant to relate and my own AEDP therapy has transformed my life.
IFS
We all contain multitudes. Internal Family Systems is a model of therapy that works directly with the different “parts” of us that emerge throughout our life to help us navigate various seasons, traumas, and challenges. It is a creative approach that facilitates deep healing by “uncoupling” outdated beliefs from our current life experience. IFS promotes integration and peace by working with our various parts to unburden them, heal their wounds, and return our consciousness to our Core Self, who is untouched by our trauma and equipped to help us navigate life as the most authentic and capable version of ourselves.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a structured approach to therapy that helps people to process distressing experiences and memories associated with trauma. It is a unique approach that engages the brain through bilateral stimulation to process trauma in a way it usually doesn’t, allowing stuck traumatic material to be metabolized and adaptive insights and actions to emerge.
